Exciting things are happening at McDaniel Park, and we need your voice to make it even better!

The Springfield-Greene County Park Board is working on a proposal to bring a pump track to the park. But that’s not all—future plans include a new entrance from National, a new parking lot, a pavilion, and restrooms to make McDaniel Park a vibrant, accessible destination for everyone.

What’s a pump track, you ask? It’s a thrilling, continuous looped track designed for bicycles, skateboards, scooters, and other wheeled sports. Made with dirt, asphalt, or concrete, a pump track is packed with rollers, banked turns, and features that let riders gain momentum by “pumping” their bodies instead of pedaling. It’s fun, safe, and perfect for riders of all ages and skill levels to build skills, stay fit, and enjoy outdoor recreation.

The Seminole Holland Neighborhood Association Board has been advocating for improvements to our neighborhood and McDaniel Park. Does this sound like the type of park development you can get behind? The Association Board would love to hear from you!

Thank you for helping us shape the future of our neighborhood!

Thank You to Our Dancing Pickles for Making the 2024 Bass Pro Cheering Challenge a Success!

We want to extend a huge *thank you* to everyone who helped make the 2024 Bass Pro Cheering Challenge a memorable event!

Despite the rain on that Sunday morning, 12 incredible volunteers from the Seminole Holland Neighborhood Association, known as the Dancing Pickles, brought their enthusiasm and community spirit to cheer on participants and represent our neighborhood with pride.

Your dedication means the world to us. Because of your commitment, we’re one step closer to earning grant funds that could make a tremendous impact in our neighborhood. We’ll find out about the grant awards at the annual Neighborhood Awards Banquet this December, and no matter the outcome, we know the heart and hard work of this team already make us winners.

To each of you who volunteered, braved the rain, and cheered with passion—*thank you*. Your support truly strengthens our neighborhood, and we’re incredibly grateful for all you do!

HUD 5-Year Consolidated Plan Community Consultation, Nov 12, 2024, at 6 pm

Consultations with community groups and organizations are required as part of the City of Springfield's 2025-2029 HUD Consolidated Plan. Residents of the Seminole Holland neighborhood are invited to join other southeast Springfield residents at this meeting at Unity Church, 2214 E Seminole St. The meeting is open to the public.

The HUD 5-Year Consolidated Plan is a strategic document required by the HUD for entitlement communities like the City of Springfield. As an entitlement community, Springfield receives direct funding from HUD through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) programs, which support housing, community development, and economic revitalization efforts.

The purpose of the 5-Year Consolidated Plan is to:

  • Assess Community Needs: The Plan identifies Springfield's housing, homelessness, and community development needs through data analysis and public input. Priorities are focused on low- and moderate-income residents and issues such as affordable housing and homelessness.
  • Set Priorities and Objectives: Based on the assessment, the Plan sets goals for the next five-years to guide the use of CDBG and HOME funds, such as increasing affordable housing, improving public infrastructure, and reducing homelessness.
  • Coordinate Resources: The Plan outlines how federal funds will be used in conjunction with local resources to address community challenges, ensuring a strategic and effective use of public funds.
  • Promote Public Participation: Springfield engages residents and stakeholders through public hearings and consultations to ensure the plan reflects the community’s needs and priorities.
  • Track Measurable Outcomes: The Plan includes clear goals with measurable outcomes, tracked through Annual Action Plans and performance reporting (CAPER), ensuring accountability and transparency in how funds are used.

The City of Springfield's 5-Year Consolidated Plan serves as a roadmap for using CDBG and HOME funds to improve housing, public services, and economic opportunities for low- and moderate-income residents, creating a more equitable and resilient community.

SPS wants to redraw boundary lines, changing attendance areas for 8 schools.

At a Tuesday meeting, Springfield district officials outlined plans to redraw three attendance boundaries.

Students assigned to attend Sunshine Elementary but who live south of Sunshine Street will be split between Twain and Holland. Sunshine is operating at 102% capacity compared to 80% at Holland and nearly 87% at Twain. If approved, the change will impact 44 students at Sunshine and 15 at Holland. Those students, currently eligible for busing due to a barrier street, will no longer be eligible.

The board is expected to vote on the changes as early as Oct. 22. If approved, letters will be sent to the families.

Springfield Public Schools wants to redraw the attendance boundary for Sunshine Elementary and assign students who live south of Sunshine Street to Twain and Holland elementary schools.

The district will not automatically "grandfather in" affected students who want to remain in their current school.

Their families can request a transfer to remain at the school or go to a different one if space is available. The district has open enrollment and there is a window each year for requesting transfers to a school other than the one the student is assigned to attend.
