REMINDER - Councilperson Craig Hosmer to Host a Neighborhood Event on March 16, 2023

There will be a multi-neighborhood meeting with Councilperson Craig Hosmer (General Seat B) on Thursday, March 16, 2023, beginning at 6:00 pm at National Avenue Christian Church, 1515 S National Avenue. Mr. Hosmer will discuss issues and accept questions about development along Sunshine Street from Jefferson Avenue to National Avenue, and along National Avenue from Sunshine Street to Grand Street.

All residents of neighborhoods that border these corridors have been invited to attend. While everyone can be affected by development along the corridors, this meeting is especially important to those living along and within about one block of Sunshine Street or National Avenue.

City Council Expected to Act on 7-Brew Permit

At its meeting on Monday, December 12, 2022, the Springfield City Council is expected to act on the ordinance to authorize a 7-Brew coffee shop to be constructed at Jefferson Avenue and Sunshine Street. The neighborhood is opposed to this development for the following reasons:

  1. Limited Business zoning is intended to serve the neighborhood. This project does not do that.
  2. Adding a couple of picnic tables and a sidewalk on Roanoke does not make the project more neighborhood friendly.
  3. A business of any nature with a drive through will likely be problematic - and once approved there is no going back and no control over what happens to the property once approved.
  4. Southbound Jefferson left turning traffic will back up into the Sunshine/Jefferson intersection. Does the city want to plan or react?
  5. Additional traffic will be dumped on Roanoke, which is a narrow residential street.
  6. Any business listed in the Limited Business zoning can go in there and have any hours of operation. But it is not likely such a business would have the traffic, noise, and hours of operation that 7-Brew does.

You can write to the entire Council at citycouncil@springfieldmo.gov. Be sure to mention you are writing about Council Bill 2022-276 Conditional Use Permit 470 in your message.

Scroll down to the October 6 Planning and Zoning Commission hearing and start at 1:53:30 and listen to the summary statements from the Commission members before they voted.

In the staff comments it was noted the City Council Public Hearing is planned for November 14th at 630 pm - show up to comment or write your councilman directly or email:  citycouncil@springfieldmo.gov.

Please write today.

FYI - The developer has positioned dumpsters to start demolition of the houses which will likely happen anyway regardless of the 7Brew project.

Planning and Zoning Update - Jefferson and Sunshine

On Thursday, October 6, the Planning and Zoning Commission considered Conditional Use Permit 470 for a developer that wants to build a 7-Brew Coffee Shop at the corner of Jefferson and Sunshine. Many people living in the area neighborhoods submitted written comments for the Commission to review and three Association members spoke at the commission hearing. The Planning and Zoning Commission voted 5-1 not to recommend approval of the conditional use permit by the City Council. Attention now turns to contacting the City Council about this issue. You can submit written comments by emailing citycouncil@springfieldmo.gov. The city council meeting where this issue will be considered has not yet been formally announced.

Sunshine and Jefferson Zoning Change Update

Some residents have received notice of a meeting in the vacant lot on the corner of Sunshine & Jefferson. The developers are attempting to put in a coffee shop once again with drive through windows. As you may know, 7-Brew was not successful in getting the OK from Planning & Zoning and City Council to have a 3-lane drive through. This appears to be a second attempt. We don't know if it's the same folks. Please try to attend the meeting on September 15, 4-6:30pm at the vacant lot on the corner of Sunshine/Jefferson.
